Judith Choi-Castro, a Spanish violinist, enjoys a versatile career performing internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. She also collaborates on recordings and serves as the Artistic Director of the Tenerife International Music Festival and Academy.
Judith was born in the Canary Islands, Tenerife, and at the age of 17, she moved to London, where she earned a Bachelor of Music (BMus Hons) and a Master’s degree from the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. She also studied at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Her teachers include Maurice Hasson, Mayumi Fujikawa, and Stephanie Gonley. During her studies, she won first prize at the Hatfield Music Festival, the J.E. Mortimer Award from the Martin Musical Scholarship Foundation, the Rondo Music Society Award in New York, and was kindly loaned a Lavazza violin from Italy, c. 1740, by the Harrison Frank Foundation. She also participated in international competitions.
Notable concerts and tours include: Stockhausen’s Donnerstag aus Licht with the London Sinfonietta at the Royal Festival Hall in London (2019); Beethoven Symphony Cycle performances and recordings at the Barbican in London, conducted by Thomas Adès (2019); Concerts with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, BBC Proms with Britten Sinfonia, Chineke!, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, and BBC Symphony Orchestra. She has toured in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
As a chamber musician, she has performed at venues such as Lincoln Center in New York, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Fairfield Halls, Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, The National Gallery as part of the Belle Shenkman Music Program, and the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. As a soloist, she has performed with the Southbank Sinfonia in Italy and Magec Camerata in Spain.
In 2015, Judith recorded her debut solo album, Assorted Encores, sponsored by the Candelaria City Council in Tenerife. She has also recorded symphonic repertoire with the Royal Philharmonic and London Philharmonic at Abbey Road, as well as with the London Symphony. Judith has a strong interest in contemporary music and frequently collaborates with living composers. She is the violinist of the Albany Trio, which focuses on new works by female composers.
Judith is also a dedicated teacher. She holds a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM) in teaching and enjoys giving private lessons as well as organizing educational projects in schools and music centers.
